About this audiobook

Turtle Moon transports the listener to Verity, Florida, a place where anything can happen during the month of May, when migrating sea turtles come to town, mistaking the glow of the streetlights for the moon.

A young single mother is murdered in her apartment and her baby is gone. Keith, a 12-year-old boy in the same apartment building—the self-styled "meanest boy" in town—also disappears. In pursuit of the baby, the boy and the killer, are Keith's divorced mother and a cop who himself was once considered the meanest boy in town. Their search leads them down the humid byways of a Florida populated almost exclusively by people from somewhere else; emotional refugees seeking sanctuary along the swampy coast.

What our readers think

Readers find this title to be a heartwarming and soulful read, with excellent storytelling. However, some readers were disappointed with the reader's performance and the screeching sounds between chapters. Overall, it is a good read with elements of magical realism, suspense, romance, and drama."

The story is excellent but the reader so-so. Even so, would have given the story a 5 if not for screeching sounds between chapters. I only keep listening since the writing was very fine but the reader didn’t do it justice.

I decided to read this book for two main reasons: 1. I previously read another book by the author, Confessions Under the Sky, which I loved, and 2. I found the synopsis very intriguing, but the truth is that it has disappointed me quite a bit.

The plot, seemingly curious and original, has left me rather indifferent. It is true that I like the message that a mother is capable of anything for a child, and I like the relationship between Rachel and Keith, but beyond that, I have felt indifferent and cold; I didn't connect with the characters. I found it lacked depth; everything is explained very superficially, and the resolution is a bit simplistic and unfounded, as if forcing the pieces to fit together.

The truth is that it is a book I do not recommend. If you want to read something by the author, I encourage you to read Confessions Under the Sky. (Translated from Spanish)
