Was slightly sceptical about this book as it seemed to be heading down the well worn path of troubled heroine, violent would-be-suitor and some time slip shenanigans. Fortunately the good writing and the interesting look at Jesus in England saved this from being just another Erskine book.

I picked this book up from my local bookshop when I needed an 'emergency read' because I thought it looked interesting. I've never read any Barbara Erskine before and I'm not sure that I'll be rushing to read any more. Its not that I hated the book, or found it offensive, I didn't, but I didn't love it either. Sadly it feels as if the whole troubled heroine, time slip narrative has all been done before.

This reveiw may conatin a spoiler.Abi Rutherford has left her job as a priest due to complications with her boss Kieron. Abi is not just a priest she also has natural abilities as a healer and a psychic. When she moves in with a family, who live in Glastonbury she starts seeing memories of past lives. The past lives that she sees are of Mora who is also a healer,and her friend Yeshua. Abi through her visions she finds that Yeshua is actually Jesus, whose life is in danger and Abi tries desperately to save him and Mora.This book is a typical Barbara Erskine. Told over two different time periods, but both stories being parallel to each other. I felt this was the authors attempt at the 'grail tale' and to be honest the story did nothing for me at all. I felt the book was over long and could have got to the point a lot sooner.

I had never read Barabara Erskine before but after reading this book I'm quite sure I will try another of her novels. I really enjoyed this story. There is actually two parallel stories going on here...one in the present and one in the past during the life of Jesus. An element of the book deals with the roots of Christianity but it also touches on pagan beliefs in early Britain as well as the supernatural. The story moves along nicely and offers a bit of suspense. A good book to lose yourself in.

I absolutely loved this latest book by Barbara Erskine. In it, she tells the story of Abi Rutherford, a curate who moves to a new parish, working under the priest there, Keir, who is behaving in increasingly more irrational ways. Abi is given a crystal by her mother, which has been handed down from generation to generation, and in it she can see the story of a druidess from 2000 years earlier. This is an absolutely fascinating book. It covers Christianity and the Church of England, and mixes this with paganism and healing. There is a dual time narrative - one story is about Abi and the other is about Mora, the druidess, and a young man who is accompanying her in her healing visits, and who is an amazingly accomplished healer himself. This man's story is one of the most fascinating things in the book, as the reader, and Abi, gradually become aware of his identity.I felt immense satisfaction when I reached the conclusion of the story. I was sorry that it had come to a close, but I felt it ended perfectly. The author has obviously done a lot of research into the various subjects covered in the book, and she's written a totally engrossing story, and one which I would recommend to anybody who enjoys historical fiction, dual time narratives, and books that cover different religions.
