- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Adorable picture book about a monster who wants to be loved, but he's the only non-cute guy around. He searches and searches for love until...
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is a very cute book about a monster who is searching for love in all the wrong places. The book shows how even though he tries very hard, he isn't able to find what he is searching for and gets discouraged. However, it does have a happy ending that leaves the reader on a bright and hopeful emotion. It's a great discussion starter for children who may be trying hard without achieving the results they desire, or for kids having a hard time fitting in. It's also a good starting point for talking about perseverance and acceptance and differences. The illustrations are bright and bold and very cute. We love this book!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Not giving up is the big idea of the story. Just when Monster was about to give up, he found what he was looking for. In my opinion, this is a great book. The writing and illustrations went together very well. For example, "[Monster] looked high. He looked low." and in the pictures, he was on the top and bottom of a hill. Even the font of the text was illustrated. In Monster's name, their was a little heart in the O. That is a subtle way to show that there is something beautiful in something as plain as the word "monster". Another example of that is the word "love" also had a heart in the O. It helps explain what the word means, which may be a helpful clue for children learning to read. Finally, I loved the plot of the story. Monster felt like no one would ever love him, but kept searching for the one who would. This is a situation that everyone can relate to at some point in their lives. I definitely recommend this book.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Not great for storytime. The kids thought it was ok, but I found it a bit pedantic.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Love Monster returns in this second picture-book devoted to his adventures, this time confronting the question of what to get that very special monster, whom he met at the end of the previous book, for the upcoming Present Day. An important occasion in his hometown of Cutesville, Present Day is the time to express one's love for one's particular friend or loved one, and Love Monster is determined to get his lady something perfect. But what is he to do when he discovers that there isn't enough money in his saving-up jar to buy any of the shiny things at the store...?A sweet, heartwarming story that emphasizes the idea that it's the thought that counts, Love Monster and the Perfect Present highlights the pleasure that handmade gifts can bring, both to the one who makes them, and to the one who receives them. Like its predecessor, this picture-book features an endearing hero, and appealing artwork, created using a process called solar etching, in which ultraviolet light is used to create printing plates. Recommended to anyone who enjoyed the first story about Love Monster, as well as to anyone looking for children's books that address gift-giving.
