About this audiobook
The perfect gift for all ages, Pinocchio as you’ve never seen him before: telling his own story through the master storyteller and award-winning author of WAR HORSE.
“Now – there’s no point in pretending here – I was, and still am deep down, a puppet. Everyone knows Pinocchio is a puppet. I reckon I must be just about the most famous puppet the world has ever known. But the truth is I’m not just a puppet, I’m more than just bits of wood and string. I’m me. So I thought it was about time that I, Pinocchio, told you my story…”
So begins this stunningly beautiful interpretation of the classic story. Michael Morpurgo channels Pinocchio’s words to tell the famous puppet’s story in his own inimitable, cheeky and always funny way.

He has written over 130 books including War Horse, which was adapted for a hugely successful stage production by the National Theatre and then, in 2011, for a film directed by Steven Spielberg. Michael was Children’s Laureate from 2003 to 2005. The charity Farms for City Children, which he founded thirty years ago with his wife Clare, has now enabled over 70,000 children to spend a week living and working down on the farm. His enormous success has continued with his most recent novels Flamingo Boy and The Snowman, inspired by the classic story by Raymond Briggs. He was knighted in 2018 for services to literature and charity.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Looooove it! Read by the author who has an incredible voice and talent. Best version by far of this story that I've ever heard. My kids age 7 and 13 enjoyed it too. Can't wait to explore more from this author
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5In this fictional autobiography, it is Pinocchio himself who narrates his many well-known, and a few lesser-known, adventures. I read this together with my 7-year-old son, and in typical Morpurgo fashion the story provides lots of discussion points, without ever raising the moralistic finger. The fact that it is Pinocchio who judges his own behaviour in hindsight I feel makes this a lot easier for children to relate to, seeing as they are probably often torn in two as to what is right, and which course of action to pursue. But as with some other of Morpurgo's books, I thought the ending was unduly rushed after having spent so much time exploring Pinocchio's adventures, and felt like 'Oh, is that it?'Emma Chichester Clark's illustrations add significantly to the charm of this book, but because of the often fairly complex psychology behind characters' motivations, I wouldn't recommend this for very young children.
