About this audiobook

In elegiac prose woven with humor, sensuality, and tragedy, this fever dream of a novel is narrated by a lonely, lovable queer mountain lion who lives near LA.

Editor's Note

Unforgettable…

To say that Hoke’s latest is unique is an understatement. To say that it's unforgettable only scratches the surface. “Open Throat” unfolds from the perspective of a queer mountain lion living under L.A.’s Hollywood sign. The unnamed creature’s interpretations of people are endearing, and his reflections on loneliness are as melancholy as they are relatable. Called “compassionate, fierce, and bittersweet” by Kirkus Reviews, this poetic story runs the gamut of human emotion.

I did not know what to expect coming into this, but I am so glad I listened. Hearing this story from the perspective of the mountain lion and the seeing his journey was a unique experience. Imagery was used incredibly and some of the lines towards the end will stick with me. Very worthwhile read.

If only non-normal people like this book, then I’m fine not being normal. Whimsical in parts but still packs some very pointed and true punches that are probably why some readers are off put.

If you love animals this book is for you . Cleverly written with insight and original thought . At times, heartfelt and sad, then brave and heroic . A fresh read, well narrated .
