About this audiobook

Lillian Haswell, brilliant daughter of the local apothecary, yearns for more adventure and experience than life in her father's shop and their small village provides. She also longs to know the truth behind her mother's disappearance, which villagers whisper about but her father refuses to discuss. Opportunity comes when a distant aunt offers to educate her as a lady in London. Exposed to fashionable society and romance - as well as clues about her mother - Lilly is torn when she is summoned back to her ailing father's bedside. Women are forbidden to work as apothecaries, so to save the family legacy, Lilly will have to make it appear as if her father is still making all the diagnoses and decisions. But the suspicious eyes of a scholarly physician and a competing apothecary are upon her. As they vie for village prominence, three men also vie for Lilly's heart.

I liked that Lily could remember so much. Also, that she stepped up to help her family. I always enjoy storylines when women are seen as competent doing some jobs that were only thought to be for men.

The e-book was great. I have always loved Christian Regency novels and Julie Klassen is one of my favorite authors. With English being not my mother tongue, I always pair my book with an audio recording wherever possible so that I can be more familiar with how words are supposed to be pronounced. This audiobook, however, is the worst I have encountered so far. The narrator skipped a lot, up to 3 sentences even, and I was just on the Prologue! I had to stop the audio. I wonder if it was really the narrator missing lines or the lines got deleted during editing. I will never know. Now I wonder if there is another audio by a different narrator like Elizabeth Jasicki. Jasicki would have some errors but only a few words here and there; she never missed reading a full sentence or more.
