Reviews for Kamala and Maya’s Big Idea

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is a great and brief children’s book. I listened to the ten-minute audiobook and didn’t get to see any of the illustrations unfortunately. The author, Meena Harris, is the niece of Kamala Harris and daughter of Maya Harris, from whom the book is inspired. After researching Kamala Harris, I stumbled upon it and figured I could listen to it, being so short. It is an allegory for political activism, showing two children trying to get a playground built. I love that it focuses on the leadership and empowerment of two young black girls and I love that the book promotes persistence and determination. They have to write letters, rewrite letters, talk to the supervisor, get advice from adults, get help from people around the community, to fundraise, to utilize resources and skills they have, and to achieve their goal through ethical and kind practices. This is a great lesson for kids and progressive book.
