- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Hillbilly Gothic: A memoir of madness and motherhood by Adrienne Martini
(Scribd auto book). This book is really a book about post partum depression suffered by a women who has roots in Appalachia . The positives of this book is that It does give evidence to how mental illness runs in families and it talks about how depression after their Children’s birth can be at times severe and requires some time under a mental health professional. It takes away some of the stigma of having a mental condition and a hospitalization. That it is really ok to not be ok and for this I think this book is a great read.
My only negative reaction is in regards to the title of this book. This topic really has nothing to do with being a “hillbilly” except that the author identifies as one. Mental illness happens everywhere not just among the hillbillies. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I really admire her for opening up on a topic that is so hard for women. Post-partum depression can be a very serious medical condition but one that alot of women go thru without the support or sympathy they need to get back on track. I was lucky of my 4 children I never went thru this but my heart goes out to the women and their family's who have. Adrienne Martini was honest with her life and her battles reaching out to those that feel overwhelmed in such a.. this is the facts but I'm casting a light of humor over it so that you feel comfortable... way. Good Book for those going thru this. She shows the grit of it but also shows the light at the end of the tunnel. The best part was mostly throughout the book I was largley entertained. I have always felt that one of the better pills to take when down in that whole is....laughter.....not a cure mind you but indeed should always be a part of any therepy. Problem is when your down it's hard to find that joy. There were a few dry spots in the book holding me from a higher star . Mostly where she goes into the history of different states and city's within. I could have done without all that but all in all .....Thumbs up on this one.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5An eye-opening look at postpartum depression. An honest look at parenting.
