On the Shortness of Life is a moral essay written by Seneca the Younger, a Roman Stoic philosopher, sometime around the year 49 AD, to his father-in-law Paulinus. The philosopher brings up many Stoic principles on the nature of time, namely that people waste much of it in meaningless pursuits. According to the essay, nature gives people enough time to do what is really important and the individual must allot it properly. In general, time is best used by living in the present moment in pursuit of the intentional, purposeful life.

The writer and politician Seneca the Younger (c. 4 BCE–65 CE) was one of the most influential figures in the philosophical school of thought known as Stoicism. He was notoriously condemned to death by enforced suicide by the Emperor Nero.

This is an amazing reminder that we have to take time to purposely live life joyfully and not allow yourself to be caught up in this system of stealing your time. Don’t be a prisoner of living up to someone else’s expectations of others, and of structures that were built before and are inconsiderate
of you. We have a specific amount of time and then that time is gone before you know it and then when you’re ready to live life, your life is over.
