- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It was a light and fun read, nothing serious and heavily emotional. It has just the right amount of humor and romance, the characters were likable, and the chemistry between Catriona and Simon was very well written. After dealing with the gruesome deaths of her parents as a child, Catriona was sent to her uncle by her brother Connor to grow up as a respectable young lady. She has this fervent dream of reuniting the Kincaid clan and later on she grows up to make it come true, and there's nothing that can stop her, she even suffered the stench of Newgate Prison to set free the man who would help her with her plans. It was killing two birds with one stone, she's escaping an unwanted marriage, and turning fantasy into reality.Simon Wescott the war hero never had problems attracting women, and the tomboyish Catriona wasn't immune to his charms. When she went to him with an outrageous proposal, he has doubts but gives in eventually. Their adventure is one of a kind. I liked the conflict presented by the author. Though Simon doesn't have PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) usually suffered by war veterans, he couldn't accept the honors given him, and we'll find out why. It was very interesting, he's not really the hero Catriona sees him to be, but nothing could change her perception of him.Their love story developed dramatically and though there were a lot of mistrust and obstacles along the way, they still managed to be together in the end. Catriona was very resilient and if not for that, she would just crumble and wither away. It was great how it dawned on Simon just how stupid he is of letting go the greatest thing that happened to him. It was really romantic how he made up for it in the ball. There were a few love scenes here and there, but it was just right. This is the 1st in the Kincaid Highlands and it happens simultaneously with the second book (Some Like It Wild). I'm glad I have a copy on hand, so I read it next.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I have quickly become a fan of Ms. M. This wasn't my favorite, but I still enjoyed it. There were several eye Rolling moments that stretched my edges of belief, but in the end, that added to the melodramatic nature of this story. Pamela was well characterized as the responsible older sibling who craved the adventure that would only validate her dishonorable birth, and readers could anticipate the truth about Connor, the highwayman, fairly quickly. Like a scene out of Cat Ballou, I loved the rescue from hanging. Sophie might have been better characterized, but as a secondary character, it wasn't as important. I would recommend this as a light romp, more appealing to those who appreciate the word "mellerdrama".
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is one of the nastiest (and therefore funniest) romance books I've ever read. I loved it.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I was expecting a typical historical romance plot. However, this book was different. It has all the same elements, but very well done. Connor is a highwayman who meets Pamela with a gun in his hand. Of course, Pamela proves this as no obstacle, and begins their journey. Agreeing to help each other out with the masquerade, they begin to see eye to eye.I didn't give it 4 stars because it was a slow start for me. However, I thoroughly enjoyed from the middle to the end of the book. What a great love story between Connor and Pamela. Of course, there were other “love stories” among other characters that just added to the depth of the book. Once this momentum hit, it continued all the way to the end of the book. Lots of great characters who you grew to love. Crispin, in the beginning I kind of hated, but in the end he changed my mind. Great character development. The romance scenes are hot and fairly detailed. Verdict: This cover is absolutely beautiful. I was looking for a Teresa Medeiros book, not having read anything by her before, and of course it was the cover that encouraged me to pick it up and read the summary. I will definitely read another book by this same author.Recommendation: To anyone who loves historical romances.
