Time out in Dullies

It's a bright Saturday morning in late summer. From my table at Baker Boys Coffee Café, I look out over the village green. There's a group of people running around it. I can tell they're not your average weekend warriors – these are lean, fit people. By the time I'm done with my smoked trout and scrambled egg on a croissant, the runners have completed at least 10 laps. And that was just the warmup.

“I've been coming here every European winter since 2017,” says Robert Farken, a member of the German national athletics team. “I run the 1500m event.”
