As a child of immigrants, with only one great-grandparent who was born and then died in the same country, I have always been drawn to the search for home. Where did we really come from?
Tellingly, my oldest named ancestor, my 14th-great-grandfather, Ishmael Cohen-Tanugi, Rabbi of Cairo, died in Egypt, far from the land of his birth, Tunisia. My family believes he fled due to conquests by Hayreddin Barbarossa in 1534 and Charles V in 1535.
