Fiona Carvell graduated with a BA (hons) in illustration and moving image design, from Suffolk College and the University of East London, which led to illustration commissions and a career in moving image design for television broadcasting. She trained at the BBC before moving to Sky Television in London, working as a moving image graphic designer and art director. This was followed by 13 years of teaching in further education before moving back to County Durham, the area she grew up in and where she now lives with her family on the border of Northumberland. Fiona became a full-time artist in 2015 and is an Associate Artist of Unison Colour, working extensively with its handmade pastels to create her artwork. Now a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and Associate of the Society of Graphic Fine Art, Fiona exhibits regularly in galleries across the UK.
With a background in graphicbut I am now much more interested in mark making within my work. Tiny fragments can be shaved off a pastel stick with a craft knife, for example, to create sprinkles of colour. This is a neat way to create fine detail for sea spray or points of light.’
