WHAT birth marks REALLY MEAN

Definitions first: birthmarks are categorised into two main groups: pigmented lesions appear as patches (usually small) of brown skin, caused by too much melanin. Vascular lesions (haemangiomas) appear in patches of varying shades, shapes and sizes of red skin, caused by the presence of abnormal blood vessels that are bunched together and do not grow normally.

Most of us just call them birthmarks. Here's what you need to know. As the name suggests, a birthmark is a marking on the skin present at birth or which appears shortly after birth. Birthmarks vary in size and shape, and can be blue, black, tan, brown, pink, red, purple and even white. Some are smooth, and some are raised and rough, but mostly, birthmarks are painless and harmless.
