Like most golf geeks, I suspect, my impression of golf on television is that we the viewers simply listen to people commentating on the action as it happens. Well, as I discovered at the recent Masters Tournament, there is a lot more to it than that, at least in terms of the range of roles played by the various analysts. Working for ESPN, I was one of those at Augusta this year.

I went into the job thinking I would enjoy being the kind of commentator I grew up listening to on the BBC. Back then, there were no advertisement breaks and it was Peter Alliss and Ken Brown sharing
