A DOZEN OR so vehicles pull up to a stoplight; one of them has those 24-inch chrome spinner rims. Who’s catching your eye?
Matt Arey says it’s kind of the same deal with an underspin. You’re often throwing it where food’s in no short supply and trusting the bait’s ability to stand out in the crowd.
Definitely some castability benefits here, but when summertime finds fish suspending around bait schools, the lead head with the belly-side bling can work wonders. The key here is an offering that follows the general baitfish profile but brings the eye candy.
“On a lot of your [blueback] herring fisheries, the spotted bass-dominated fisheries where groups of fish like to get around brushpiles and cane piles, the underspin is one of my Top 5 baits,” Arey said. “Largemouth do it, too, [on these lakes], and they also do it on the Tennessee River. Brush can be a bigger player in July/August, as opposed to just ledge fishing.”
