THE PARABLES OF JESUS The wicked tenants

Of the roughly 40 parables of Jesus, only about half a dozen appear in all three of the synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke). We’ll look at one of them this month.

Renting out a vineyard

Jesus tells the parable of the wicked vinedressers (also called the parable of the wicked tenants) at the beginning of the last week of His earthly ministry, known as “passion week”. In the parable, a landowner rents out his property to tenants who agree to pay him a portion of the produce from the land. The landowner does everything necessary for the land to produce healthy grapes and tasty wine. All that is required is that those who work the land would properly tend it.
