TO LIVE LIFE TO THE fullest had always been my motto until Lyme disease stole my energy and zest for life away. After six years of struggling with mystery symptoms before being diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease, then being forced to resign from my career as a professor due to the debilitating symptoms, I was finished being a warrior fighting for a cure. Although I had tried extensive treatments – the list includes: antibiotics, herbal supplements, functional medicine, therapy for heavy metal poisoning, mould remediation, homeopathic remedies, Ayurvedic remedies, far infrared saunas, BioMats, saltwater pools, kinesiology, barometric chambers, induced fevers, Chinese herbs and acupuncture – I found myself bedridden. My vitality was gone. Having exhausted my medical resources and become a burden to my family, I made the painful decision to commit assisted suicide. I didn’t want to take this drastic step but my body and mind had become so decrepit that they were no longer habitable and I had nothing to give back to my family or to society. I was depleted and I was draining everyone around me. It was after I had made this decision, one afternoon in the midsummer of 2017, that I made the serendipitous discovery of dry fasting.
