PLUMBING

Sink outlets below the waterline

Q I was interested to read Richard Hare’s account of renovating his Westerly Consort (PBO April 2024).

He says that he converted the sink drain outlet on the Konsort so that it now exits above the waterline (like all my previous boats did).

I now have a Hanse 325 whose sink waste skin fitting is below the waterline. I agree with Richard’s opinion that this is an unsettling design feature.

So is there anybody who knows of a practical reason why some boats have the sink waste skin fitting below the waterline?
