Can Dell refuse to repair if warranty has ended?

Q In January 2023, I bought an £850 Dell Inspiron 14 7420 2-in-1 Touch laptop (pictured) from John Lewis. Within a month the touchpad became faulty, which Dell did repair. But in October the fault reappeared, and the touchpad became unusable. Dell said the laptop couldn’t be repaired, so decided to replace it instead. Then Dell changed its mind again and said it would only repair the laptop. However, one month later it refused to even do this, claiming the laptop was out of warranty. Can Dell walk away from its responsibility like this?
