It is difficult to be as confident about Italy’s chances ahead of the upcoming European Championship as on the eve of Euro 2020. That team arrived at the last finals on the back of a sparkling qualifying campaign, with consistency in selection and formation, and solid preparation, all of which carried them to the trophy.

This current side comes into Euro 2024 on the back of a traumatic and turbulent three years, which have seen the Azzurri fail to qualify for the Qatar World Cup, lose their coach Roberto Mancini to Saudi Arabia after just two games of their European Championship qualifying campaign, and then finish a clear second best to old rivals England in their group.

England not only finished a comfortable six points clear of Italy, beating them 2-1 away and 3-1 at home, but the squeezed through as second-placed qualifiers only thanks to a superior goal difference
