Early plaster ceilings date back to Tudor times when the undersides of floorboards in the upper rooms of the more high-status buildings were concealed, often decoratively with plaster ornamentation or paint, to improve comfort. By the Georgian period, plain plaster ceilings had become more commonplace in most homes.

Old plaster ceilings enhance the interiors of houses and early wall paintings occasionally survive on them too, perhaps hidden under layers of later paint. Unfortunately,
