That is the plea from Durban’s homeless to the eThekwini Municipality and local government, as they struggle to stay alive on the city’s crime-infested streets. They say they are beaten and robbed daily for their clothing, food and blankets. Now, they have to face the cold nights on the streets as they cannot afford the private shelters.
Recently, three homeless men shared their plight with POST.
With just the clothes on his back and clinging on to a plastic packet with his treasured books, Nalendran “Nadasen” Pillay said he had lived on the streets for five years.
Pillay, 59, who worked as a machine operator, is formerly from Northdale in Pietermaritzburg. At the time, he was married and he has
