CARS AND STARS SHOW THE WAY IN WEST SUSSEX

Driving father Westie’s Chevron-BMW B8 superbly, Ben Mitchell pulled off a famous, if unexpected, victory in Sunday’s Surtees Trophy sports prototype race, a highlight of Goodwood’s 81st Members’ Meeting.

Having pipped Andrew Kirkaldy (in fellow Scot Sandy Watson’s B8) to be second to John Spiers (McLaren-Chevrolet M1B) in qualifying, Mitchell was swallowed at the start, which Kirkaldy jumped spectacularly, copping himself a 10-second penalty.

As Mitchell jostled back past several big bangers to challenge Kirkaldy, Spiers squandered a winning lead when he tagged Joaquin Folch’s Ford GT40 approaching Woodcote and spun onto the grass.
