Preview web pages without opening links

Google is testing a new feature in Chrome that shows you previews of web pages without you needing to open them. This saves you the time and trouble of loading an irrelevant page in a new tab, and helps keep the browser’s memory usage down.

To activate the option, type chrome://flags into Chrome’s address bar and press Enter to load the Experiments page. Find the entry Link Preview, select Enabled in its dropdown menu and click Relaunch.

When the browser reopens, you can test the new feature using two different methods. Either hold down the Alt key while clicking a link on a web page, or right-click the link and choose ‘Preview link’ ( in our screenshot below). A will then open in the bottom-right corner of the browser showing you the contents of the linked page.

You’re reading a preview, subscribe to read more.
