How can I create a rockery?

Q We want to create a rockery on a slope in our front garden. Could we use a mix of soil and compost… and what are some all-year, low-maintenance plants we could use?

Well done! After terracing the slope, starting at the bottom and edging terraces with artistically arranged backward-sloping rocks, fill horizontal beds with a fertile and well-drained planting medium by mixing soil with a generous quantity of coarse grit laced with composted manure.
