The family home is a well-understood trope in Australian culture, although not one that is synonymous with high-end architecture. It’s perhaps most vivid in childhood memories – nostalgia for the cosy spot spent watching Sunday night movies together, a sunny nook where the family dog was inevitably found, a secret cupboard stocked with cricket bats and other miscellaneous items, or a spot for the outdoor barbecue that became a hive of activity on a warm evening. The family home is a place where friends and family are welcome and the architecture functions as a facilitator for the rituals of daily life.
