Great walking in beautiful surroundings

Straddling three counties, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, famed for its honey-coloured stone and chocolate-box villages, the Cotswolds is nevertheless something of an enigma. It is difficult to identify any single thing that makes it beloved by so many.
There is so much waiting to be discovered here, not least the gorgeous landscape itself. History is everywhere, reaching back to the Neolithic age, through the Roman era, to its medieval heyday, when great wealth was created from the wool and textile industries. There’s even a palace.
Modern additions include water parks, cycle tours and breweries. And don’t forget the Grade II-listed model village or the source of the Thames.
There are also a couple of excellent nature trails and long-distance walking routes, including part of England’s longest inland trail. That path, the Monarch’s Way, is
