I remember my dad being mildly amused that, as a teenager, I’d spend a fortune on making my perfectly reliable standard(ish) Lambretta more noisy and unreliable by bolting on various go-faster bits that in turn caused other engine components to fail. When we were young and not knowing (or caring) too much about the mechanics of how things worked we did these things.
But, after 30 or 40 years of tinkering with two-strokes, I think that we’ve
