Dave was born in 1957 in Barrow-in-Furness and later studied for a degree in fine art at Goldsmiths, University of London. His first bike was a Cossack Ural Mars Mk III combination. He became a professional make-up artist, specialising in prosthetics. He bonded with fellow Hairy Biker Si King in 1995 over a curry in a pub in Newcastle when they were working on a TV drama and would go on road trips together. It took 10 years before the duo got their TV presenting break as the hosts of The Hairy Bikers’ Cookbook With lots of bike-related travel, easy-going cookery and buckets of good-natured banter, their warmth and friendship
