A LASTING legacy

Chatting with one of South Africa’s leading concert pianists, Christopher Duigan, we find out more about the treasured garden created by his late partner – Professor Barry Lovegrove. “Barry was an academic and had a special interest in the desert environment,” says Chris. “He wrote an iconic book, published in 1993, called The Living Deserts of Southern Africa. It was revised and republished just a few months before he passed away in 2022.”

Barry studied at UCT and did post-doctoral work in America, Australia and Germany. He had just taken a job at the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg when he met Chris – almost 30 years ago. After studying at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, Chris returned home
