UK backs UN resolution calling for Ramadan ceasefire in Gaza - but Israel angry at US for not blocking it

The UK backed a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) call for a ceasefire in Gaza during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Downing Street said the UNSC resolution sent a clear message that the hostages held by Hamas should be released and aid should allowed in to Gaza.

Hamas responded to the resolution by saying it has informed mediators it will stick to its original position on reaching a comprehensive ceasefire, which includes the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, a return of
