This glorious, open-hearted piece remains ever-popular with performers and audiences alike. And for good reason. Its long melodic line and magical harmonies convey all the optimism and magic of spring, all contained in a modest few pages of music representing Mendelssohn at his finest.

Composed in 1842, in Denmark Hill, London, it is one of numerous pieces in the genre of Songs without Words that Mendelssohn composed for solo piano. These pieces were variously aimed at pianists of all abilities and they range from the technically approachable to the technically highly challenging!
