“Not in Newcastle”

In the March 2024 issue of Steam World, you printed a letter from Tony Ramsden suggesting that I did not see certain ex-LNER engines around Newcastle in the 1950s and 60s. He is quite correct as my letter he refers to, called “Spotting in the North-East”, was a shortened version of an earlier article from which an important sentence had been cut.

The position is as follows. I wrote an article, published in the April 2023 issue, which covered two topics, firstly ‘Spotting in the Newcastle Area’ and secondly, ‘One-off ex-LNER Locomotives’. This article made no claim that these locomotives were ever seen in Newcastle.

By accident, a second version of this April 2023 article was reprinted as aof having many ‘one-or-two ofa type’ engines and also individual engines which differed slightly from their classmates……’ with no reference to Newcastle.
