So, Pravin Gordhan has at last decided he’s had enough and plans to retire after the May elections.

What took him so long?

He could have stepped down gracefully some years earlier when the halo on his balding patch was still firmly intact. But he chose to labour on as Minister of Public Enterprises, his saintly light losing some of its burnish in the process.

Today, Eskom is in a shambles, Transnet way off track and Denel hanging on by a thread.

He may still hang onto pockets of loyal fans in some areas but will be fooling himself if he believes he’s going to emerge unscathed after this
