New ground in wild feeding studies

WILD PARROTS

IN THEIR wild habitats, parrots are confronted with an array of potential food items, and each species is not only adapted to concentrate on preferred foods but is also adapted to use the most effective techniques for the manipulation and ingestion of the food items. Research is increasingly examining how wild parrots process different foods for their ultimate consumption, and how the handling of food items can also result in seed dispersal and contribute to ecological functioning.

One recent study has explored the feeding behaviour of wild grey-breasted parakeets from the perspective of how different kinds of foods are manipulated (Camelo, 2023). This study builds on the results of earlier research to
