It’s no wonder high-society figures queued up to have their portraits painted by John Singer Sargent (such as Miss Elsie Palmer, above) – who else could invest his subjects with such glamour and panache? An exhibition at Tate Britain, London, devoted to his passion for fashion, offers an opportunity to admire, until 7 July.
