The Code Less Traveled By

Two roads diverged in an intersection, and I—I took the one less traveled by. And that made all the difference. Or, at least, it could.

I’m not saying I ever wished it would happen. I’m not a monster, no matter what the prosecuting coders say. The Trolley Problem made philosophers out of coders, politicians, and CEOs. Who lives, who dies? That trifling thought experiment pumped the brakes on rollouts of bots like me for decades before the tech caught up with the dream. Surely, a machine cannot be trusted to make that split-second decision. Surely, a human who dithers for months on what color interior is best for his new car is better at decreeing which set of viscera will decorate that tastefully designed
