Did this feel like a difficult third album all over again?
Is it the third album or is it the seventh? It feels like a bit in that it took a lot longer than the first two. We changed producers, but it wasn’t so much a wish to change things, it was things outside of our control. We brought in Richie Kennedy to help with engineering and he slowly became the driving force of the record. He went through a year’s worth of demos and found tracks we’d forgotten about. He could hear it all afresh. I thought the closing track, “Yesterday…”, was going to be a big rocker. And he said, no I think it’s a ballad. It should be just a voice and keyboard and we should record it live. Eventually late one night we got it. Richie captured the mood it needed – a humility.
