Austin, Texas, has always been home to an eclectic group of dreamers that have contributed much to the state’s culture through the arts. Just outside of Austin, in the small town of Buda, lives an artist who is at home in these rolling hills.
In 1989, Dewey Pentecost was playing music for a living as a touring drummer. Austin was the “musical capital of the world” and he stayed busy. Like many musicians he had a daytime gig, as a construction supervisor for Time Warner Cable.
One night, Dewey was wearing a leather jacket that he really liked on a date. Unfortunately, he tore it on a chain link fence. He heard there was a guy in downtown Austin that could fix it. The next day Dewey visited The Leather Bench, a leather shop owned by Johnny Gioe.
“He fixed my jacket to
