Why I won’t switch from Freeview to Freely
The launch of Freely sounds interesting (‘Question of the Fortnight’, Issue 677, pictured), but it won’t take off until the company releases an affordable set-top box.
It’s delusional to think the 16 million viewers who still watch Freeview are going to buy a new TV just because it comes with Freely. Most people I know are looking for reasons not to buy a new TV, and would rather get their programmes from streaming devices. My current Freeview box is the Oakcastle SB110, and it cost a mere £30 (www.snipca.com/49247).
I know that Freeview isn’t cutting-edge or exciting, but it remains solidly popular with many people. It feels a bit old-fashioned and the interface is poorly designed, but it suits viewers who are on a limited budget. Nothing I’ve read about Freely will make me switch off Freeview any time soon.
