These days Botswana is far more accessible to the aspiring adventurer or avid traveller. And if you plan right, you could camp at facilities that offer electricity, flushing toilets and hot ablutions. You could also comfortably travel with a 4x2 or even a sedan car… if glamping or lodging are more your style, that is of course!
However, to get to some rural areas and camp wild, you need a proper 4WD vehicle, kitted to be self-sufficient. It would also be better to join a trustworthy tour group to enjoy the benefits of the unknown. And this is exactly what we do on our annual Botswana New Year Adventure.
Day 1
We had met up with our adventurous travel companions at the Stockpoort Lodge the night before to get to know each other a little better and everyone was excited to get going. We fitted a two-way radio to each vehicle and after assisting Sheralee (affectionately known as the ‘Lady in her Land Cruiser’) with a quick repair to a loose stabiliser bar, we were ready to cross the border.
This went off without a hitch
