Lancashire has a rich footballing heritage. It was the stampingground of pioneering footballer Lily Parr, who was born in St Helens in 1905 and played for Dick, Kerr Ladies Football Club, a works team that played charity matches in Preston during the First World War. And of the 12 clubs that founded the Football League in 1888, half were from within the county's historic boundaries – Accrington, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Everton and Preston North End.
