NICK BALDWIN 1945-2024

Nick Baldwin’s first job was in Land Rover’s experimental department. One year later, just 17, he was editing ‘Vintage Commercials’, a small-circulation publication published by North London Artists. From this, he moved to staff positions with IPC, initially on Autocar, then Commercial Vehicles and Motor Transport.

After leaving IPC in the late 1970s Nick became the B in MHB Publishing, one of the pioneers in old-lorry book publishing. He went on write numerous books on cars, lorries and commercial vehicles including from 1974, the iconic Observer’s Book of Commercial Vehicles.

His magazine work was equally prolific. His accurate, well-researched but also entertaining writing appeared in magazines ranging from Stationary Engine to Supercar Classics, and including Practical Classics, Diesel Car, Bus & Coach Preservation, The Automobile and Kelsey Media publications Tractor & Machinery, Old Glory, and, of course, Classic & Vintage Commercials. He was also for many years a member of the National Motor Museum’s advisory
