When it comes to having children, the course of parenthood never ran smoothly. However, the path is remarkably more complex for samesex couples with uteruses.
"We know how lucky we are," says Meg Write sitting with her wife Kayleigh Write, both 29, "In West Yorkshire, we're eligible for six rounds of NHS-funded IUI and one round of IVF."
This is far from a universal experience. Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a medical procedure that places sperm in the womb at the time of ovulation. For some couples, IUI can result in pregnancy. However, IUI only carries a third of the success rate of that of IVF. This step can't be skipped for same-sex couples (though it is optional for cis-het couples), as "proving infertility" is a requirement to access IVF care.
