Ooh girl, you got female: the women queens proving that drag is for everyone

In 2020, trans icon Kylie Sonique Love reentered the werk room on RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 6 after 11 years, making herstory with just five words: “Ooh girl, you got female.”

The entrance line was of course a PC-friendly version of the controversial catchphrase that preceded RuPaul’s werk room entrance for the first six seasons of the show, before being replaced by, "She done already done had herses." Though she was not the first out trans queen to battle for the title of America’s next drag superstar, it was a full-circle moment turning the show’s misstep into a moment of celebration – with Sonique Love later snatching the crown – the first time for a trans queen on the American franchise.

In more recent years, the global drag competition has expanded its roster of cis, gay men to feature trans men, non-binary queens, as well as a handful of cisgender women – with Victoria Scone making. “When they told me I got on, I said ‘Are you sure?’ I thought it was a big prank until I stepped into the werk room.”
