‘I try to bring the sport to lifewithout shouting’

WHEN I was the officer in charge of running Tedworth Park Polo Club, the home of military polo, in the 1980s, one of the most important tournaments of the year was the Pony Club polo championships. The late John Wright, who was running it, came and said: “Well done, you’ve organised all the pitches and we have something like 40 teams coming. Tell me who you have commentating?”

And I said, “Well, ah…” – I’d forgotten to fix the commentator.

He said, and I’ll use a different word: “Well, you bl**dy well do it.”

So, I stumbled into it by accident.
