MONKEY MOURNERS

For the last few months of his life, Ramkunwar Singh from Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, India, regularly fed a local monkey. Although it is described as a “chimp” in the newspaper article, it is clear from the photos that this was a langur; chimps aren’t native to India and are apes, not monkeys. After Singh’s passing, the langur repaid his affection by mourning at his funeral, following the body 25 miles (40km) to get to it. Photos show the monkey clinging to the yellow sheet covering Singh’s body on the car carrying it down a motorway. Once at the funeral, video shows it sitting next to the corpse alongside family members, apparently weeping along with them.
