The commonest cancer in the over-60s, its symptoms include blood in the urine, which is usually painless. Signs also include frequent or urgent need to pee and burning discomfort. Once spread, bone pain, pelvic pain, weight loss and leg swelling may occur.
Most bladder cancers are linked to harmful substance exposure over many years. Chemicals in tobacco cause over a third of bladder cancers. Other risks include previous chemotherapy, long-standing urinary catheters, bladder stones and repeated infections.
