The small luminous dot grows slowly bigger, standing out from the backdrop of stars. After more than nine years of travel, the small probe finally approaches its destination of Pluto, where it will perform a close fly-past travelling at nearly 50,000km/h, capturing a wealth of data about the dwarf planet’s mass, size, its variations in temperature and atmosphere – as well as stunning close-ups of the planet and its moon Charon.
